The Weiss Pattern Mastopexy is a technique used to reshape and restore the breasts. Oftentimes a woman’s breasts will change over the course of time. These factors may include: gravity, aging, weight fluctuations, breast-feeding, pregnancy and may even stem from congenital birth defects. A Mastopexy is intended to address and correct these problems, even address the area of the nipple areolar complex. Which can become thin, effaced and larger than it should be.
In the United States the Weiss Pattern Mastopexy is the most common and utilized form of Mastopexy. Able to remove the highest proportion of excess skin and tighten the surrounding tissue of the breast. This form of mastopexy requires an anchor incision. Extending from around the nipple down the breast and into a smile incision that curves underneath the breast. Forming an anchor-like incision. Elevating the breast from the chest wall, by lifting the breast, and reducing the breast mass over the breast weight. Bringing the nipple areolar complex higher on the chest wall.
There are many advantages to the Weiss Pattern Mastopexy. The most recognized advantage being the large amount of breast tissue that can be removed during this operation. The disadvantages of this procedure, however, are its’ compromise to the healing time, shape and projection of the breasts. Bearing less of a natural curve and extending the healing time of the wound. Which stems from the area being surgically sectioned into ‘panels’ with their own source of blood supply. As a result, the skin has a more difficult time healing.
There are higher risks associated with this operation and, although they can be performed safely in most cases the risks are still present. The most severe being complications to the flow of blood that can inhibit the area from circulating blood, causing the area to turn black. A risk associated with most forms of reductions. After this procedure, the extensive array of anchor incisions cannot be performed again until many years after. When the breast is healed and reestablishes blood supply. Whereas the vertical mastopexy can be adjusted time and time again as necessary.
